The Don’s (of the Oxford Dictionary) have spoken and the new word of the year is…Selfie!

the official definition now is “a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website.”

Couple of my favourites which didn’t make the cut include; You ‘404’ – someone who is clearly in the wrong, a ‘Nonk’ – wanna-be smart guy or ‘immergrunt’ – work shy, immigrant hating UK resident.

But nope, Selfie won it! through its blog, the obviously busy panel revealed how it determines the prestigious award:

Our Word of the Year need not be a new word. However, it does need to demonstrate some kind of prominence over the preceding year or so and selfie certainly fits the bill. It seems like everyone who is anyone has posted a selfie somewhere on the Internet.

Other popular words included “hashtag,” fail,”“surveillance,” and “the cloud,” among others. But we’ve been saying most of those for years so your kinda late on those ones Oxford!
